How to Get Ink Out of Office Carpets

Posted on

You want your office to remain clean and stain-free, so it can be bothersome when you notice ink stains on the carpet. Luckily, there are a few DIY methods you can try before calling a professional cleaning crew to come out and remove any stains.

The Salt Removal Method

Salt works well on ink stains. If the ink is still wet, you can try dumping some salt into the stain. The salt may absorb a good amount of the ink. If the ink has already dried, try wetting the stain and adding the salt. If it isn't quite up to the task, then you can try moistening the stain with a non-oily hairspray, and then adding the salt. Be sure to blot the stain with a dry towel to pick up as much of the ink as possible. Repeat until the stain has disappeared. This is even a good treatment if you intend to call a carpet cleaning company, but want to get as much of the ink up as possible while it is still wet.

Permanent Ink Removal

This harsh type of ink can be difficult to remove, but with this method, you may see some success. First, try wetting the stain with alcohol or hair spray. Once the area is saturated, use a towel to lightly blot the stained area until the colors begin to run onto the towel. Once you have removed a sufficient amount of the stain, blot the area gently with a towel soaked in warm water.

You may need to do a few passes alternating the hairspray and the alcohol until the stain is gone. Some stains might not come completely out due to the strength of the ink.

Treat It Quickly

When ink spills on the carpet, be sure to immediately begin to treat the affected area because every moment that the ink sits on the carpet will give it a chance to set in more permanently. This is especially true for the synthetic-fiber carpets that are common to commercial buildings and offices. Be sure that when you are doing the dabbing that you absolutely do not scrub or rub the stain in any way. Once the area has been cleaned, be sure to use a wet-dry vacuum or another clean towel to remove any extra moisture from the treated area. This will prevent dirt and dust from collecting on the dampness left behind.
